"Resting and Refreshing" at Bison Ranch, AZ
Ponderings on a white buffalo's birth and White Buffalo Woman's prophesy
The room in the above picture would not actually be a restful place to hang out for me, with these huge bison heads hanging over my head…but this photo was taken at a nearby restaurant/event center, not actually the old-timey styled timeshare getaway I’m writing from called Bison Ranch in the very small town of Heber-Overgaard, AZ. Very big thanks to my friend Sue for donating this week’s luxury lodging! It does get hot inside Goldie in Arizona July…
Yes my van has air conditioning, a lovely blessing, but A/C drains power quickly, so unless I’ve found a plug-in spot, a cool van is quite temporary. Feeling like I was slightly cheating, I gleefully accepted kitchen suite living (unlimited water! 🛁 washer-dryer!), and put down temporary roots at Bison Ranch.
Reverence of bison 🦬 and grief at their soulless slaughter are feelings many humans share, including me.
Speaking of bison, did you hear about the rare white Buffalo calf born in June, just last month, in Burnet, TX, named Unatsi (the Cherokee word for snow)?
The White Buffalo Woman Prophesy
“White Buffalo Woman” or PtesanWi, as she is called in the Lakota language, is a messiah, aka a divine (feminine) figure, who appeared to the Lakota people about 2,000 years ago, bringing gifts and wisdom to her tribes, and left a prophesy in her wake:
White Buffalo Woman promised to return to earth one day, sending four sacred white buffalo as a sign.
She said when all four white buffalo had returned, the people would be at a crossroads. If they took the right path, there would be a renewal of the Earth. If they chose the wrong path, the Earth would be destroyed, and there would be no hope of restoring harmony beyond that point.
If these sacred white buffalo signs were recognized and heeded, a period of peace and harmony in the world would be restored before her return, when the Mother Earth would heal herself and all men would live in harmony with each other, nature, and the natural world, but only if the right choices were chosen.
Have you, like me, been wondering if we have reached this nexus as a “civilization,” where our decisions will soon permanently decide our collective fate? Do you, like me, fear for humanity, despairing at times, perhaps because of how we treat each other, and especially our children?
We have to stop the child sex/labor trade.
I recall my near-death experience when I was 29 years old, in a serious car accident that catapulted me through a vortex to what felt at the time like heaven, though after studying multidimensional reality, I now believe was the 5th dimension. I detailed this experience in my memoir, Naked in Public.
There, I was offered an opportunity to choose: stay in edenic bliss or return to earth. The “me” in that spiritual experience said, upon choosing to return,
“I want to go. I have something more to give, I want to give it! I care not the consequence. It cannot be worse than standing by to watch yet another utter end.”
And so I returned, to a body that held memories of profound atrocities, where my only chance at peace meant reckoning with them somehow. I always felt, looking back on that experience, that I was speaking of an imminent threat to earth, and a deep desire to serve her people, and help protect humanity somehow. I know that experience has inspired me ever since, through all the pain that followed. So the story of White Buffalo Woman is particularly meaningful, and the birth of a new white calf last month has me wondering if we are here, at that crossroads, where our choices have profound significance on the future of earth. I think the answer is yes. A privilege that is hopefully sobering. We must help the children.
Recently, a deeply respected spiritual advisor of mine, Jeanette Archer*, recommended I rest up and let my inner child play more, to stay in balance for the times ahead. As a recovering workaholic, I know rest is oft overlooked as sacred medicine. So, I’ve been resetting my nervous system here at Bison Ranch (though there are no actual living bison here).
But because I’m integrating parts of myself used to extreme intensity, I have a wide and perhaps somewhat unusual range of what feels “playful.”
One night, I found a bike and headed out to see a fantastic storm, but was turned back by an intense, though warm, wind. I ended up at the Wild Woman Saloon.
There was no thunder or rain, but the lightning storm looked like this picture above** (note to self: better camera needed for actually capturing lightning images)!
**All photos mine unless noted, for example this one above from the National Service Storms Library.
How do you rest and play? How much can we afford to, when the world can feel like it’s falling apart around us? I’d say, and I need to hear this again, we can’t afford not to calm ourselves and pursue joy! I love to sleep, read in bed, and make fresh pressed juice.
But we also have to take action to help the vulnerable. We need to free all children. Time is of the essence.

She created a conference about SRA and is active supporting survivors on Facebook. She is yet another shero of mine!

We have a choice to continue on a path of destruction, or to change that. For those of you who are interested in the White Buffalo Calf, you might be interested in Arvol Looking Horse (Lakota), the 19th generation Keeper of the Sacred White Buffalo Calf Pipe. He is also the founder of World Peace And Prayer Day (worldpeaceandprayer.com). It is for all nations, all religions, all people, to pray for world peace on June 21st every year.
Many good points.💕
